Default Moon gold and the subsequent wealth

I was sitting here bored at work and was intrigued by the current economic climate in Eve. The moon gold changes have already significantly reduced the passive alliance income greatly, but the real question is how the wealth was invested/spent the several years the r64's were pouring moon gold. I know several alliances that were quintessentially "ghetto rich" that spent their revenues freely. I also know several alliances that invested huge sums into different profit centers, which will allow their wealth to continue growing ad infinitum.

The alliances now that CCP hopes to venture out into null-sec to reap the wealth are at a huge advantage. How are they going to have the capabilities to go against large alliances that have fifty trillion in assets and liquidity? It seems like an obvious answer, but one I am curious about since I have my own opinion(s).
